Easy, just make your friends not want to hang out with you. By buying yet another clapped out VW.

This time, it’s a 91 Jetta GL with an Ecodiesel from a wrecked 91 Jetta swapped in. It makes good wooshy noises. I’m told this is a rare motor.

EDIT: she is not an E codiesel! It’s a normal 1.6 turbo diesel. Essentially the same motor, but the turbo is different and the injector pump has a LDA with a boost reference line to increase fueling as boost increases.

Sounds like an interesting ride. I always liked that boxy shape, especially the two door. And a diesel on top of that? NP.

Just out of curiosity, how much?

Believe they’re off a Mk2 Jetta Carat, but missing a center cap

Which interior does it have? Some of those Mk2 and 3 interiors are pretty rad

OMG, I had a 91 Eco Diesel in that exact colour.

$750. Way cheap. Guy was retiring and just wanted it gone. It was his daily driver. There’s a bit of rust that I may clean up. The paint is pretty bad and the hood needs remounted, the radiator support is a bit messed up, but it’s whatever. I’ll just drive it for a while before I decide what I want to do with it.

I think GL was the base model, so it’s a pretty sparse interior. It’s not amazing, but it’s definitely VW. I like it. I’ll make a bigger post with more pictures in the future.

It actually might not be an Ecodiesel, just a regular turbodiesel, I dunno. A TD would be better because more power, though. It’s got enough torque to chirp the tires off the line.

Ecodiesel was a Turbo and I can tell you that it was more than capable of breaking the tires loose. IIRC it put out about 150+ ft lb of torque.

Also double check the VIN, EcoDiesel had a Wolfsburg badge.

I remember those wheels from my days working at a VW dealer. Those are actually the rare forged wheels that came on the Carat. Nice stuff, and pretty desirable .

150? Maybe with the pump turned all the way up and the governor shimmed... Factory rating for the ecodiesel was 81 pound feet.

Mine seems not to be the ecodiesel, the pump has an LDA and boost reference line.

I think the car was a gasser that was blown up, the PO got hit in his car but the drivetrain was fine, so a shop swapped the good motor into the current chassis. Ohio titles don’t say fuel type, but the VIN starts with W so it’s a German car.

Cool! I like em. The car has two in the trunk, two on the car, all bald and dry rotten all seasons. The front that it has are steelies with bald dry rotten winter tires. So yeah, the guy I bought it from was DEFINITELY a VW owner.

I’m gonna put new rubber on the Carat wheels and probably put it on some coilovers, tidy up a few things, and keep it around as a daily. So now my fleet is up to...

1996 Golf 2.0 (exhaust is broken, too loud to drive)

1996ish Jetta 2.0 (no fuel, no spark, I think it’s an alarm issue. VW electronics...)

1991 Jetta turbo diesel

1986 Cabriolet, running a bit rough when cold, needs tires. Autocrosser for the season, unless the season is cancelled.

1981 Rabbit Diesel, still inoperable. Need to get it into my shop space and get that project off the ground

1994 Saturn SC2, burns some oil and has a bunch of issues but is my daily

I just found an old box of keys the other day. I’m not sure why I didn’t get rid of them when I got rid of the cars, but I was surprised at how many I had. Some of them may have been leftovers from the dealership - I don’t know. I have had my share of VWs, though:

1977 Dasher Wagon

1984 Rabbit GTI

1983.5 Vanagon

1981 Rabbit Pickup (highly modified with a built 2.1 from a GLI - scaryfast)

Unlike you, I only had one at a time...

Man would I love to own a Dasher or a Quantum. Unfortunately, they just don’t exist anymore. Which explains why I own so many right now, in a way. I like them quite a bit, so I jump on anything Mk3 or older since the number of good clean ones is decreasing and the coin people want for them is increasing. Especially in the salt belt. So, if I want them, there’s really not a good argument for why I shouldn’t have like, eight of them at a time. I have a decent enough storage/shop area where I can probably shove five and still be able to work on one, then keep one or two out to daily drive.
